How to make a shaker card for Valentine’s day with your Cricut.

Today I am going to teach you how to make a shaker card for Valentine’s Day. What’s a shaker card? It is a card with a window cut out usually in a shape, like a heart, with two pieces of acetate that hold confetti or glitter.

As you move or shake the card the shaker filling also moves making it interactive. It’s an easy way to take a paper craft or card to the next level. Shaker cards are very easy to make especially if you have a Cricut.

With Valentine’s day approaching I thought why not make a Valentine’s day shaker card using a heart shaped window and heart foil confetti.

How to design a shaker card

In Cricut Design Space use a card template. I used this small one with rounded corners and a score line. Using the shape tool I added a heart to the front of the card and attached it. This heart will be cut out as a window for the confetti shaker.

Create separate rectangle that is slightly larger than the heart. Duplicate it. This will be the cuts for the acetate.

Start by cutting and scoring your card. I used the scoring wheel for the Maker. If you have an explore you can use the scoring stylus.

How to cut acetate with a Cricut

Did you know you can cut acetate with a Cricut Maker or Explore? You don’t even need a deep point blade or a knife blade just the fine point blade. I ordered my acetate from Cricut. It comes with a protective film on it. When you are ready to cut remove the protective film and place the acetate on your Cricut standard grip or light grip mat.

You will want to make sure you set your material to acetate in design space.

Once your acetate is cut flip over your mat and peel your cut acetate off the mat.

Assembling a shaker card

Now that everything is cut you are ready to assemble your shaker card. Start by placing on sheet of acetate on your table. Place confetti on to the acetate leaving about a 1/4″ border for glue.

Using a clear craft glue, like this one, add glue around the edges of the acetate.

Using your fingers or tweezers carefully add the second piece of acetate on top. Make sure to line it up. Let it dry a few minutes before moving it. You do not want your confetti to touch the glue while it is wet.

Open the inside of your card and glue the acetate to the card. Careful not to get glue too close to the heart window. Let dry completely before closing the card.

Just like that you have a beautiful Valentine’s Day shaker card ready to gift to someone you love.

  1. Thanks Michelle! In all my years of cardmaking, I’ve yet to make a shaker card despite having all of the tools. Great tutorial!
