July 4th is just around the corner and I have been dying to do a project with mason jars and pallets. Today were going to making a patriotic mason jar candle sconce. Cute for July 4th parties either outside or in!
Now I've had this idea since last July. My friend Jake had made these gorgeous stars and stripes mason jars for July 4th and I have been thinking about them ever since. He did a great job right?!
What you'll need
- Piece of wood
- Mason Jar
- Red White and Blue Paint
- Paint Brush
- Hose Clamp
- Hanging mechanism
Paint the pallet white. I used regular household latex paint for this.
Now using a pencil or painters tape add straight lines and start to paint your red stripes. My original thought was to paint the wood blue with stars but Jake had given me the idea to paint the mason jar blue and let the light of the candle shine through the stars.
In order to do this I just out multiple size stars on vinyl with my silhouette. Don't worry if you don't have a silhouette. Find star stickers they should work the same way.
Now to cut the stars I used the vinyl preset which is Blade 2 Speed 8 and Thickness 9.
Place the stars on the mason jars make sure to rub them on good to create a tight seal.
We painted two coats of blue acrylic paint on the mason jar. Now if I was to do this again I would not use this paint. I have painted a lot of mason jars and this paint was very streaky.
Letting your pallet dry for about an hour drill two screws on either side of the hose clamp to secure it tightly. Now I tried to screw directly into the metal but I could not pierce the metal. I think you might be able to do this if you have an impact drill. Make sure to size the clamp slightly bigger than your jar before you screw it in place. Then when your jar is carefully (to not scratch the paint) slide it in your clamp. Then you are ready to tighten your clamp with a flat head screw driver.
Add a small or medium size pillar candle and you are done. If you are having an outdoor party you can even use a citronella candle to keep the mosquitos away!
